On Wednesday, 29 July, Year 6 students from Christ the King School joined students from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Darra, for an inspiring day of faith, reflection and connection at the Ignite Youth Formation Day.
Centred around the theme 'Jesus and Me', the day provided students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of their faith while building relationships with peers from another Brisbane Catholic Education school.
Hosted at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, the Formation Day invited students to explore what it means to develop a personal relationship with Jesus and to live out Gospel values in their everyday lives. Throughout the day, students participated in engaging sessions led by the Ignite Youth team, combining music, discussion, prayer and interactive activities.
The day began with an energetic welcome featuring songs, introductions and icebreaker games. During the first session, Who is Jesus?, students were encouraged to reflect on Jesus' life, teachings and example. Through conversation and shared activities, they explored how Jesus continues to guide and inspire people today.
Students then participated in the session Jesus and Me, which focused on their identity as Children of God. Through music, movement and faith-filled discussions, they reflected on their own gifts and talents and considered how they can use them to serve others and contribute positively to their communities.
Christ the King School Assistant Principal Religious Education, Mrs Suzannah Halpin, says Christ the King values opportunities for students to engage in formation experiences beyond the classroom.
"Formation Days provide students with the opportunity to encounter their faith in a different way," Mrs Halpin says.
"When students gather with other Catholic school communities, they come to understand that they are part of something much bigger than their own school. They are members of a wider faith community, united by shared values, beliefs and a commitment to following Jesus."
Mrs Halpin says these experiences are an important part of helping students grow spiritually during their primary school years.
"Our goal is to help students develop a personal relationship with Jesus and understand how faith can influence the choices they make every day. Formation Days encourage students to reflect on who they are, how they treat others and how they can live out the Gospel through kindness, compassion and service."
The final session, Jesus in My Life, provided an opportunity for students to pause and reflect. Through prayer, music and guided reflection, students considered how their faith can shape their relationships, actions and future aspirations.
Beyond the formal learning sessions, the Formation Day also provided valuable opportunities for students to connect with peers from another Catholic school community. These interactions fostered a sense of belonging and highlighted the shared mission that unites Catholic schools across Brisbane.
Experiences such as the Ignite Youth Formation Day form an important part of the faith journey at Christ the King School. They complement classroom Religious Education by creating meaningful opportunities for students to engage with their faith in authentic and memorable ways.
Students returned from the day with new perspectives, strengthened friendships and a deeper appreciation of their place within the Catholic community.
