Learning came to life for our Prep students as they embarked on an exciting investigation into the world of two dimensional shapes. Becoming enthusiastic shape detectives, our young learners explored the school environment in search of circles, squares, rectangles and triangles, discovering that mathematics is all around us.
Equipped with shape magnifying glasses and plenty of curiosity, students carefully examined familiar spaces and everyday objects across the school. From windows and doors to playground equipment and signs, children delighted in name shapes they recognised. As they explored, students engaged in rich discussions, compared shapes and proudly shared their discoveries with classmates.
"This hands-on learning experience forms an important part of early years mathematics," Christ the King School Principal, Mrs Bernadette Wright says.
"Developing an understanding of 2D shapes helps children build foundational mathematical skills that support future learning."
She says shape recognition strengthens spatial awareness, visual thinking and problem-solving abilities, while also helping students develop the language needed to describe, compare and classify objects.
By exploring shapes in authentic, real-world contexts, our Prep students were able to make meaningful connections between mathematical concepts and their everyday experiences. These opportunities help children recognise patterns, notice similarities and differences, and begin to understand how mathematics plays a role in the world around them.
At Christ the King School, we know that young learners thrive when they can actively engage with their environment. Through inquiry, exploration and discovery, students develop confidence as mathematicians and learn to approach new challenges with curiosity and enthusiasm.
The shape hunt provided countless moments of excitement and discovery as students worked together to investigate their surroundings and apply their classroom learning in practical ways. It was wonderful to see children so engaged, sharing ideas, asking questions and celebrating their findings.
"We are incredibly proud of our Prep students for the enthusiasm, teamwork and perseverance they demonstrated throughout this learning experience," Mrs Wright says.
"Their ability to spot shapes in unexpected places highlighted just how much learning can happen when children are encouraged to explore, observe and wonder."
As our young mathematicians discovered, mathematics is much more than numbers. It is about making sense of the world, recognising patterns and building the skills needed for future success. And sometimes, all it takes is a shape detective's eye to uncover the mathematics that surrounds us every day.
